Monday Morning Devo - When is Too Much?

Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female servant and the stranger may be refreshed. Exodus 23:12, NKJV.

Sometimes we take on too much work (voluntarily or assigned) and wind up with no time to rest. Some professions demand long hours at no additional pay. Doctors and lawyers, for instance, quite often put in ten- to 20 hour-days preparing cases, healing, or researching. The result is tired professionals who miss things seen through bleary eyes and mushed-up brains.

Everyone needs to rest. I've begun taking Sundays off from writing (work-related) or other work, instead watching uplifting movies or writing letters or otherwise doing something refreshing.

Sunday isn't the best day for resting for at least one vocation--pastoring. My two sons are both pastors, so Sunday isn't the best day for them to rest. Waitresses and other service-oriented occupations sometimes have their days off during the week.

We often say that our weekends are the only time we have to "catch up" on undone household or yardwork items. However, you still need a day to catch up on rest! Don't beat yourself up because there is still a speck or two of dust on the shelves or the lawn has a dandelion or two. Don't worry--they'll still be there tomorrow for you to take a quick swipe at!

God wasn't kidding when He said we need a day of rest, a day of just communing with Him, napping, loving on our families. Why don't you try it for a couple of weeks? See if you don't feel better.

Father God, help us. We tend to forget to put you first, even on our "Sabbath" day. I don't know why we need often reminders to rest our bodies and brains or to focus on You, but we do. Poke into our busyness and remind us, precious Lord, that You come first. For Jesus's sake as well as our own. Amen.
