For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. Philippians 3:18-21, NKJV.
Boy does this verse hit home for me. Overeating has long been a bugaboo of mine. I still struggle. Those potatoes and gravy, rolls with butter, fried chicken, the sugary treats--they all grab at me. The belly never seems to be totally satisfied.
True with other things "of the flesh," too, isn't it. People too often have problems with pornography, power, flashy cars, bigger houses, expensive vacations, money--you name it, the belly god wants it all and then it wants more.
How do you get rid of the greed, the wanting? How can we become satisfied with what we have?
The Apostle Paul said he had the answer: the Lord Jesus Christ. He's the only One who knows how to free us.
Not that it's ever going to be easy. It takes one day--or maybe even one moment--at a time.
Lord, help us be the overcomers You always planned for us to become. We don't know how and we don't have the strength on our own. It will take You intervening for us, so Lord, please, would you? For Your own Son's sake, Amen
