Monday Morning Devo - Goodbyes
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory." 1 Corinthians 15:54 NKJV
Except for those who die very young, everyone will experience the death of someone we love. Knowing we won't see the loved one again until we, too enter heaven is painful. Mourning isn't reserved to the poor, the rich, the physically strong, the weak, or any point in between. The pain of that goodbye happens to all of us. It's not easy. There's no magic pill that can eliminate mourning. Unless you count drugs or alcohol--and those have their own pains to deal with. Plus the mourning doesn't go away, it just gets postponed for way too short a time.
Nor does know everyone goes through the same thing help a lot, except it does give us someone to talk to who really does understand your pain. I'm not sure why that helps, but it does.
And when our own pain decreases (and it will), then we can listen to someone else who needs to talk about their suffering. Remember to be patient. Remember not everyone gets through their pain quickly. It doesn't mean they're weak or less of a whole person than you are. You can hang in there until you get through it, and so can they, but they might need your empathy. They might need your prayers. Give both generously.
Father, thank You for listeners, pray-ers, warm and strong shoulders. Thank You for always being there for us. Help us to always be there for someone else. For Your sake and for Your glory, Amen.
