Parable of the Sower:
[Jesus said] "Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants." Matthew 13:7 (NIV)
"Listen then to what the parable of the sower means." Matthew 13:18 (NIV)
"The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful." Matthew 13:22 (NIV)
Jesus went to the trouble of explaining to His baffled disciples who didn't have a clue what He was trying to tell them with this parable. People living in those days would understand that when you plant seeds some at the edge of the plowed field fall among the thorns infesting the area. Who wants to go into a thorn bush to pull out a few kernels of wheat?
Have you ever been in the middle of prayer when you started thinking about the washing or getting the oil changed? Yeah, me too. But I don't think those things totally choke out our belief. On the other hand, deliberately pursuing wealth rather than faith, dwelling on your social status more than on His words you want a relationship with God--that could hurt your trust in Him.
It seems that what Jesus tried to get across to His disciples was that the Word of God should occupy our thoughts far more than wealth or prestige.
Prayer: Precious Lord, thank You for giving Your Words to us. Forgive us, Lord, when we slip up and put ourselves and our wants above You and the wisdom You have for us. Help us remember You are worth far more than gold or fame. For Your sake and in Your name we pray. Amen.
