Monday Morning Devo - Light into the Darkness

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16, NKJV

The Bible also says Jesus is the light of the world. What exactly does that mean, anyway?

Most of us have been through dark days, days when we'd rather hide in a dark closet than see the light. Depression can set in easily there--more darkness. Or maybe temptation came knocking and we gave in. Or someone close to us did, betraying all we hold dear. Such terrible darkness! The death of a child or spouse or parent or best friend; a move away from everyone we know to somewhere new and different; divorce; loneliness; darkness.

How can Jesus shed light into that deep blackness?

Because He is God. Because He cares so deeply about us. Because, if we let Him in, He can give us the light we need to find our way back to Him, to life. It only takes our permission for Him to begin to act. You see, He's a gentleman. He won't force His way into our hearts. He knocks on the door, but He won't open it. Will you?

Lord, thank You for being so patient with our hesitations. Thank You for waiting for our invitation to come in. Thank You for loving us enough to seek us out and to offer us your life-giving light. Thank You for providing light bearers to shine that inviting candle for us. Amen
