Book Review--THE LONG JOURNEY, VOLUME 6 OF OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER, by Janice L. Dick
This series is a great grouping of stories about Mennonites living in Russia prior to the 1930s. Each volume of the series begins with a resolution--sort of--of the one previous. Each ends with a delicious cliffhanger.
In this volume, The Long Journey, Luise has been teaching school children, but her scant sleep is riddled with nightmares. She has had word that her husband is dead. As she mourns him, another man is courting her, and an officer of the GPU (the Soviet secret police) is threatening her. She is conflicted. Should she marry the man who is her husband's best friend? Should she disbelieve the account of her husband's death and wait for him? How long?
Daniel, her husband, is not dead. He has been found near death and nursed back to health by people whose language he cannot understand but whose kind nature is obvious. As he heals, he wonders where he is and how to find his way back to his wife. Is it north? South? Where? And how can he find out?
This suspenseful and inspirational series can be found on Amazon.
