Monday Morning Devo - The Danger of Angry Words

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire." Matthew 5:21-22, ESV

Pretty strong words Jesus said there, weren't they? Somehow I don't think He was talking about the everyday squabbles kids have. They say pretty cruel words to each other--but their anger lasts only for a few minutes.

There are those who carry knives and guns and go out to hurl angry insults, pull out their knives, or wave their pistols in threat. In danger of judgment, so true.

And there are those who carry their anger and fling it against everyone around them. Those who call everyone who disagrees with them "fools." Lord preserve us from such anger and from such angry ones.

Prayer: Father, forgive us when we carry anger or call people names. Help us to let go and forgive ones who offend us. Grant us the courage to ask for forgiveness when we offend. Help us, Lord, to become better than we used to be.
