Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. James 5:16, NKJV.
Why is it necessary to pray? God already knows our every thought and action, right?
When my kids were small (and really, even since they grew up!) they would go for hours talking to each other, playing, etc. They didn't think it was necessary to talk to Mom unless they were hungry, thirsty, or in pain.
That's sometimes how we treat God, too. I wonder sometimes if He feels lonely for His children, wanting them to stop a minute and talk to Him even when they didn't need a thing--just wanted to talk.
The verse above suggests that when we pray for others, we also benefit. We pray for others to be healed, to be forgiven, to find God for themselves, to travel in safety, etc.--and it comes right back to us. Neat. Or as the younger set would say, "for reals."
What goes around, comes around. Do for others what you would have them do for you. Hear no evil, speak no evil. Love even those who hate you. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
Eternal truths.
Lord, please poke us on occasion and remind us You'd love to talk to us now and then. For Jesus's sake, amen.
I used to ask myself this question a lot, but now I feel the need to pray all the time! I believe it helps us immensely to pray, see God's hand at work, and then our faith grows!
