Saturday Sermonette--Making Memories

Me, Mom, Aunt Helen, Aunt Wilma, Uncle Bill - Jamaica 1989
On last Wednesday evening and Thursday morning we visited with my last remaining aunt and uncle, my dad's sister and her husband. Aunt Wilma is a retired nurse, and Uncle Bill a retired school superintendent.

In 1989, Aunt Wilma, Uncle Bill, Mom, Aunt Helen, and I went on a cruise together, and it will always be one of my most cherished memories. We rehashed that cruise in our conversations with a few more smiles.

At the time I wasn't exactly flush, and I spent nearly all my savings to go. It might not have been a wise investment, but it's one I wouldn't trade for the world. It was only a few years later that Mom's mind had mostly escaped, but her memories of that trip never faded. She even dreamed up a few more cruises.

There are some things worth more than money. Memories of time spent with loved ones--worth more than gold. Thank God for those times we sacrifice cold hard cash for something more important.

Don't get me wrong--If I'd had to sacrifice house payments or utility bills or groceries for that trip, it couldn't have happened. A roof over my children's heads, heat for the winter, and food on the table had to take priority. It should for you, too.

But still, precious memories with our loved ones are more important than a new car, a fancy house, than even money in the bank.
