Saturday Sermonette - How to be a Grownup, Lesson 12

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 1 Corinthians 13:1, NKJV

Where's your treasure?

Do you remember the story in the Bible about the rich young man? He wanted to know what he had to do to get into heaven (Matthew 19:16-22). When Jesus told him to keep the commandments, the guy said, "I have been doing that since I was a child. What else?" The Jesus gave him the news: the man would need to sell all he had, give the proceeds to the poor, and come follow Him. Guess what? Even the prospect of heaven wasn't enough to convince him to give away his treasure--his many possessions.

No, I'm not telling you to go sell everything you have--that is, unless that's what's preventing you from having a great relationship with the Lord. It takes maturity to give up what seems valuable but is really only a temporary pleasure.

Your treasure is what's most valuable to you. When I was little, that might be an ice cream cone. Pretty temporary treasure, huh? Well, some "adult" treasures are just as temporary. Gorgeous houses and cars? An affair with that good-looking new guy or gal at the office? A double chocolate fudge mocha? A vacation to some beautiful, romantic spot? All temporary.

Heaven is permanent. Jesus is forever. If He is the most important part of your life, He's your treasure. Is He yours?

Father, I want You to always be my most important treasure. Thank You for always being there, waiting for me to come to my senses. I love You! Amen.
