Book Review - THE ROSE OF LANCASTER COUNTY by Murray Pura

Fiction is cyclic, normally, but Amish fiction has hung in there for a bunch of years longer than most publishers ever expected. Why? Maybe because people are drawn to the simple faith, clothing, and attitudes of the plain religions. This one focuses on the beginning of their faith in the early 1700s, and I have no doubt but what you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Rose Lantz is an unassuming, quiet, pretty young woman who loves to quilt, has a handsome fiance', and is the much-loved granddaughter of Jakob Amman, the leader of their community. She has nothing to worry about in this world, and spends her time chatting and sewing with her best friend Libby.

Libby is a beautiful girl--black hair and stunning blue eyes, and many of the English (non-Amish) thing she is a witch, beguiling innocent men, flying around on a broomstick, making the children sick, and killing the calves. When Rose is injured defending her friend from an attack, a mountain man in buckskins fights off the five attackers, brings her to her parent's house, and sets her heart to racing.

And then Libby is arrested. Rose steps up at her best friend's trial and successfully defends her. When Libby is released, they think everything will go back to normal, but such is not to be. Now the Englishers are saying Rose is also a witch, and tempers flare again.

Who will defend Rose? Her best friend whose parents order her to stay at home? Her parents, who believe in turning the other cheek? Her husband-to-be, who demanded she disassociate herself from Libby? Or that buckskin-clad wild man?

Grab it, folks. One of the best Amish fiction I've ever read. Available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

I did receive a free copy of the book from the author, but no one asked me to write a review. I decided that all on my own.
