Church service June 26, 2011

I wish you all had been there this morning. Each summer here in Willows, the First Baptist Church, the First Methodist Church, and the First Lutheran Church get together to put on a Vacation Bible School (VBS). (Sometimes I wonder if there has ever been a Second Baptist, Second Methodist, or Second Lutheran Church???)

Monday through Friday, the kids and adults learn a little more about God, and on Sunday, we have a joint church service and celebrate. The kids show off what they've learned, the adults laugh and smile till you think their faces will break. This year was no different. I wish I'd taken my camera--you should see the priceless pictures in my mind!

They chose a theme for the VBS this year called the "Shake It Up Cafe." The kids made themselves aprons, and they learned about healthy eats and Bible bites and and secret ingredients for life. They didn't talk much today about what they ate, but they wore their aprons--such artistry! And they shared their daily Bible verses and secret ingredients, and I'll tell you what they were if you promise to only share them with your closest friends. ;)

Their chef (Pastor Ted Crandell) and his assistant, Scraps (who strongly resembled a racoon), led a lively bunch of kids (age two to about 12) in songs accompanied by signing. And there was one particularly enthusiastic dancer, a blonde cutie about two years old. Another small star grabbed the microphone when no one was watching and entertained the congregation.

Monday
Memory verse: Psalm 27:14, "Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord."
Secret Ingredient: "Be ready for God." (SHAKE IT UP!)

Tuesday
Memory verse: Hebrews 13:16, "Do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased."
Secret ingredient: "Give happily to God." (SHAKE IT UP!)

Wednesday
Memory verse: John 14:1b, "You believe in God, believe also in Me."
Secret ingredient: "Believe fully in Jesus."(SHAKE IT UP!)

Thursday
Memory verse: Luke 22:19b, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in rememberance of Me."
Secret ingredient: "Remember Jesus often." (SHAKE IT UP!)

Friday
Memory verse: Psalm 45:17, "I will make Your name to be remembered in all generations; Therefore the people shall praise You forever and ever." (SHAKE IT UP!)

It seemed obvious the kids really enjoyed this year's VBS and the Shake It Up Cafe. Thank you and God bless you, all you volunteers. You know who you are. I can feature God beaming down on kids and volunteers alike.

Our Methodist, Lutheran and Episcopal churches always do VBS together and this year we'll be using the same curriculum you're doing. And, yes, I do remember Second and Third Baptist Churches but I forget where they were. San Francisco maybe?
